I always love to get the chance to helm the story that is told in an edit. With hours of interview footage and b-roll, I was tasked with assembling a two-and-a-half minute story.
When approaching something like this, like to nail down the theme, or primary focus of the video. That is, what is the one thing the viewer needs to take away after watching? In this case, I landed on the notion that anyone – even if they’ve never camped or fished before – can go out and have an adventure.
With that focus in mind, it becomes easier to select the clips and soundbites and put them together in a concise way; make it all point toward that message, while filling out the video with the personality of the central character.
This is the story of a woman who had never camped or fished until she met her now husband, and ended up spending a good chunk of her life out there having adventures in the wilderness.
